Scope and Contents

From the Item:

This collection includes a memorandum book of Chinese students’ names; diaries written by Margaret Watson Gillespie Fagg; a number of miscellaneous notes and addresses; correspondence from acquaintances; a Report of Committee on Foreign Students in the United States by Margaret Watson Gillespie Fagg, an announcement from the Chinese Students’ Christian Association in North America; a fragment of a betrothal announcement; a page from the Membership section of the International House Handbook; and photograph negatives and photographs.

The collection begins with a memorandum book of Chinese students’ names Margaret Watson Gillespie Fagg collected between 1921 and 1935. She would note various details outside of the students’ names such as the date she met them, their address, and area of study. For a number of the students, she would have a short description of how she met them and if they had an outing.

The individual yearly diaries written by Margaret Watson Gillespie Fagg started in 1917 and ended in 1949. These diaries were pocket sized and briefly notated the happenings of the day sometimes her weight along with a description of the weather or the high temperature reported for that day. At times, these diaries were used as a calendar - to note times of future appointments and meetings.

The diaries written during her time at Camp Merritt (1917-1919) would contain excerpts from letters of soldiers who were writing home to loved ones. On December 2, 1918 Fagg wrote about finding an unsigned letter in a library from a bugler at Camp Merritt and being on the ship that escorted Woodrow Wilson to Paris to attend the Paris Peace Conference.
