Guy Potter Benton was born in Kenton, Ohio, on May 26, 1865. In 1886, he received an A.B. from Baker University, Baldwin Kansas, and was licensed as a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. From 1881 to 1895, Benton was the Superintendent of Schools in Fort Scott, Kansas. He accepted the position of Assistant State Superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Kansas in 1895. The following year, Benton began work in higher education by as Professor of History and Sociology at his alma mater Baker University. In 1899, he became President of Upper Iowa University, a post he held for nearly three years.
In 1902, the Miami University Board of Trustees named Benton University President. Under Benton, Miami's curriculum was expanded, and departments of history, sociology, and economics created. Benton believed that Miami needed to grow if it was to survive. As President, he devoted much of his time to recruiting trips throughout Ohio, and he corresponded extensively with potential and current students, and their parents. Benton also instituted a major building program; Miami's first women's dormitory, Hepburn Hall, was completed in 1905; an addition to the science building in 1906, a central heating plant in 1907, an auditorium /administration building in 1908, Alumni Library in 1910, and another women's dorm, Bishop Hall, in 1911. In 1906, Benton's lobbying efforts were largely responsible for the defeat in the Ohio legislature of the Lybarger Bill, which would have reduced Miami to the status of a normal school. For his efforts, Benton was dubbed "The Savior of Miami" by grateful alums and students. By 1910, other institutions were courting Benton, and he turned down an offer to become president of Boston College. But after nine years of service, he felt that he had prepared Miami for the challenges of the twentieth century, and he longed for a quieter environment. When he was offered the presidency of the University of Vermont, he resigned from Miami in June 1911. Between 1917 and 1919, Benton served with distinction with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe, and April 1920, was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. In 1921, Benton accepted the Presidency of the University of the Philippines, a post he held until serious health problems forced his resignation in 1924. Benton died on June 28, 1927, following a lengthy illness.
