"In 1845 Stoddard was appointed Professor of Natural Sciences and Vice-President of Miami University. He remained on the faculty for 25 years until 1870, and in 1854 served as Acting President between the terms of Presidents Anderson and Hall. During this time he also served as President of the Board of Trustees of Oxford College for twelve years and represented the Synod of Cincinnati on a commission that established the North Western Theological Seminary in Chicago. A plaque on the inside wall of Stoddard Hall presented by the Class of 1963 (which incorrectly identifies the building as Stoddard House) states: 'This building bears the name of the faculty member called the "little magician" by his students, among them Oxford College girls who came to see the ownders of chemistry and magnetism as he demonstrated them.'
In 1870 when the University of Wooster was founded, Dr. Stoddard was chosen as Professor of Natural Sciences at this Presbyterian institution. He continued to teach at Wooster until his death on Feburary 10, 1892. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Alpha Delta Phi, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science."
