Childcare This box contains both information on the nursery school that was located at Western College and also Camp Sawyer.

Camp Sawyer was a summer day camp for 3 to 11 year-olds located primarily in the Western Lodge. The camp was founded in 1965 by Gail James, a physical education professor at Western College. In 1973 the camp instituted a program for children with above average intelligence who have a learning disability. The learning disabilities program helped children with their motor skills, visual perception and memory, as well as auditory perception and spatial orientation. Activities for all campers included swimming in the indoor pool at Western and outdoor activities on the campus such as archery, tennis, dramatics, puppets, and fishing.

The nursery school began in 1942, which had Western students as volunteer workers. The nursery school was located in the Cottage, which acted as headquarters. Tuition was 50 cents a week.
