Burton L. French taught government at Miami University from 1935-46. Joan Chapman (Epstein) graduated from Miami University in August 1946. While at Miami, Chapman took classes with French and also worked as his assistant. French and Chapman wrote for several years following her graduation. She studied law at Stanford University and attended graduate school at New York University. After his retirement, French became involved with the Civil Service Commission's Loyalty Board of Review. Many of French's letters discuss Joan Chapman Epstein's graduate work and French's experiences on the Review Board.
