  • Biographical or Historical Information

Leila McKee was born in Danville, Kentucky in 1858. Her father John Lapsley McKee was Vice-President of Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. McKee was a graduate of Western College Female Seminary and Centre College. In 1886 Wellesley conferred upon her the degree of Bachelor of Arts. In 1888 she was selected as the second principal of the Western Female Seminary. During her term she was elevated from principal to president of the seminary. The years of McKee's administration were considered to be some of the most important in the history of the institution. In 1894, the Western Female Seminary became "The Western: A College and Seminary for Women." During her tenure as president new courses were added as were male teachers. Two news buildings, Alumnae Hall the school's library was built in 1892 and a dorm in 1905, later dedicated McKee Hall in honor her contributions. In 1904 McKee resigned and married James B. Welsh of Kansas City.

Western conferred an honorary degree upon her in 1927. Leila McKee served on the Western College Board of Trustees after her departure as president from 1909 until 1933. She died in Kansas City in 1938.
