  • Biographical or Historical Information

The campus of Western College is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The seminary was granted a charter by the state of Ohio in 1853. Located in Oxford, Ohio, the institution changed its name to the Western College for Women in 1904. Due to financial difficulties it merged with Miami University in 1974. The campus of the former Western college is located directly east of the campus of Miami University and is characterized by winding pathways through forest and stone bridges over creeks. Peabody Hall, Patterson Place, McKee Hall, Sawyer Gymnasium, Mary Lyon Hall, Kumler Memorial Chapel and the Stillman-Kelley Studio are the buildings designated as historic structures situated within the Western College for Women Historic District. The newer buildings Western Lodge, Ernst Nature Theater, Molyneaux Western Tower, Ice House, Summer House, Boyd Hall, Hoyt Hall, Clawson Hall, Alexander Dining Hall, Langstroth Cottage and Thompson Hall within the district lend themselves significantly to the total environment.

  • Scope and Contents

The collection begins with general information about the buildings and architecture on the Western campus. There is also information on the college's designation as the Western College Historic District. In addition, there is an article from the Western Bulletin, spring 1990 edition which features an eyewitness account by students on the collapse of Kumler Memorial Chapel during its construction in 1918. There is also information about the construction of the stone bridges and lampposts on the Western campus. The bridges which span the campus ravines serve as the unifying theme and add to the beauty of the grounds. Cephas Asher Burns, an Oxford resident served as the stone master for the construction of the bridges. Horse-drawn wagon loads of round cannonball stones were hauled from local creek beds. Burns and his workmen also constructed most of the stone facings on the campus buildings. Structures that display the stone facings include Kumler Memorial Chapel, the Stillman-Kelley Studio and gateways on the campus. The collection concludes with text various programs documenting the dedication of the buildings on the Western campus.
