  • Biographical or Historical Information

    Ralph Kiddoo Hickok was born in Humboldt, Nebraska on January 18, 1880. He received his A.B. Degree from Wooster College, his M.A. Degree from Princeton University and his B.D. Degree from Princeton Theological Seminary. He also held the D.D. Degree from Wooster College, an honorary LL. D Degree from Miami University and the Litt. D. Degree from Waynesburg College. Hickok served as assistant pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of New York City and later as pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Brooklyn, New York. Prior to his Presidency at Western College he held of position of Professor of Biblical Literature at Wells College in Aurora, New York. In 1930, he accepted the position of President of Western College. Hickok served in that position from 1931 to 1941. The Great Depression hit Western College very hard. Salaries of faculty were cut and enrollment declined. Even though the institution faced these problems, he was the first president to organize and gather the history of Western. During his administration he also formed a faculty club, began the first student newspaper the "Western Round Up" and organized an orientation week in 1938 for incoming students. In March 1941, Hickok suffered a serious heart attack and resigned in February 1942.
