    Ernest Herman Hahne was born in Walker, Kansas on October 20, 1890. He received an A.B. degree from the University of Nebraska in 1911, an A.M. degree from Harvard in 1914, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1930. Hahne worked as an Assistant Professor in Economics at the University of Nebraska from 1910 to 1913, and was admitted to the Nebraska State Bar in 1913. From 1915 to 1916, he served as an Assistant Professor in Sociology at the University Chicago in 1919; Hahne joined the faculty of Northwestern University, where he remained until 1946. During the 1930's Hahne served as an administration member of the National Code Authority of the National Recovery Administration for cotton cloth glove, academic costume, and household ice refrigerator industries. He also served as a special assistant and federal tax consultant for the Republican National Committee.

    By the time Miami University Board of Trustees appointed Hahne to the presidency of the institution, he had gained a national reputation as an expert on finance and tax policy. Hahne oversaw University efforts to deal with the dramatic growth in enrollment under the GI Bill. During his tenure, the University was dotted with temporary prefab buildings housing married and single veterans, as well as academic departments. Hahne was also instrumental in implementing a long-needed reorganization of the Miami Athletic Department, which ushered in an unprecedented period of University success in men's sports. The Athletic reorganization was only one portion of a major administrative overhaul and rationalization that President Hahne hoped to accomplish. Unfortunately, after scarcely a year in office, he began to be plagued by major health problems that would incapacitate him periodically throughout the remainder of his term. Vice President and Provost Clarence Kreger exercised effective oversight of University affairs from late 1951 until President Hahne's death on November 25, 1952.
